Lief Erickson Genily

Hi this is my genily about Lief Erickson who was the first person to discover America 500 hundred years before the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. I enjoyed doing this because I found out about things I didn't know before this like who his brothers and sisters are. Have you ever done a genily before? Bye, Matilda

my writing

Hi this is my writing that I have been working on for a while. I really enjoyed doing this because I could come up with my own ideas. Have you ever done this?

Bye, Matilda.

It all happened so quickly! One minute he was standing on the platform, the next he was hurtling through the air, hanging on for dear life… I opened my mouth to let out a scream but nothing came out. Suddenly a piece of half eaten pizza hurtled towards my face. I lifted up my hand to protect myself without realising I had let go now my body was shooting threw the air nearing a pole rising out of the ground. Then I got my voice back “help” I screamed it in a bloodcurdling manner. Half of the people on the platform looked around but there was nothing they could do but call a ambulance. The last thing that I remember about that day was laying on my back looking up at the ceiling with a bright white light shining on my head and hearing concerned voices around me. Now that’s all that I can remember.

Bye, Matilda.

Bracing himself against the torrent of icy wind that rushed towards him down the narrow pass, the lone figure prepared himself for the challenge ahead. He wrapped his coat further around him and shivered as the icy wind whipped up his hair and snow fell in flakes onto his scuffed brown trousers. He grimaced and pushed forward into the narrow hole ahead. He crouched down and rubbed his hands together. He didn't know if he would make it out alive but he kept on persisting. He struggled out and pushed forward into the uncertainty that waited for him around every corner.

As I walked along the street my friend ran up to me panting and sweat dripped from her forehead she fell to her knees and gasped “the street it’s gone.” I laughed what “do you mean the street is gone?'' she replied “look around.” I grunted “fine”. I turned my head around getting ready to blurt out something but nothing came out of my dry lips. She was right the Piece by piece, the street was disappearing. My eyes googled and I just stood there suddenly a huge piece right under me gave way and my friend and I were plummeting into the darkness.

Kupe biography

Hi this is my Kupe biography that I have been working on for a while. I enjoyed doing a biography because I could find facts and work by myself. Have you ever written a biography?
Bye, Matilda.

He had power and sometimes he abused that power. For example he killed his cousin so he could have his cousin’s wife. To make it worse he didn’t end up marrying her. That is the reason why he fled and went to Aotearoa, where he and his crew fought a giant octopus.  This chase led him to New Zealand where he travelled around the country discovering new places. Eventually he went back to Hawaiiki. There is another idea on why he left his homeland. There was a food shortage in Hawaiiki and he tried to find some food by travelling across to Aotearoa. He fought a giant octopus then travelled around New Zealand naming diffrent places. Travelling around Aotearoa he found green stone and then fought the giant Octupus. His wife Hine-Te-Aparangi and his two daughters thought he had died. The myth says they cut themselves with sharp rocks and to this day in Wellington there are white rocks with red on them.

art

Hi this is my oh the places you'll go art which we had to dye a background then put in a land mark and colour in hot air balloons and place them on the dye. I found it very fun to do this especially the dying and the hot air balloons. The most interesting thing that I learn't was to make the best dye background. If you did this you should use this website to remove the background remove background. Have you done this before?

Howick historical village visit

Hi this is my Howick Historical Village which was very fun. The bus trip was very long it was about 40 minutes which is ages! We had three different activities they were:Image result for howick historical village

1.  Old games.
They were very fun, we learn't about why they played them and how the kids made them. Did you know that some had to be games that you could play on ships because other wise they would get in the way.
We played stilts, skipping, bowling, grace, log walkers, small stilts, hoop and skimmer and coytes. I found the skipping and stilts hard. Hoop and skimmer is you have a metal ring and a line connected to it and you have to try and run around with it without the ring falling over. It is difficult.

2.  Decoding.
We went to an old house and learnt about different ways that people communicated in the 1800s. They were morse code, braille and semaphore.
Semaphore is communicating by flags, each letter has a different flag sign. Red and yellow flags are used for the sea and white and blue flags are used for the land. They are very helpful when trying to communicate over long distances.
Braille is used when someone is blind and there are raised dots, they mean different letters.
Morse code is used on ships to tell if there is a problem or if there is a warning. You can also use it on land and sos is the most simple sign. You press a button and it will make a beeping sound on the other one. Then they will be able to decode it, depending on if the beeps are short or long.

3. School.
The school was very fun. We went into a tiny building with no paint on the walls and sat on desks with slates in front of us ( slates are rocks that people in the olden days used instead of paper. ) We used slate pencils (it was very faint against the rock) and the teachers made us write out lines. The sentence was "the cat sat on the mat" and we had to write that out in connected writing, it was hard! Then the teacher explained why they caned kids in the olden days with some examples.  In the olden day schools boys sat on one side of the room and girls sat on the other.

Did you enjoy your visit to Howick Historical Village? Did you know that the old fashioned schools couldn't make the temperature hot or cold so in the winter the teacher had to come in and get the fire going.
Bye, Matilda.

my kaitiakitanga

Hi Matilda here,
I am going to show you what kaitiakitanga by looking after endangered species of animals so that they won't die out and people of the next generations will be able to see them and appreciate them to. As a scientist said "all of the animal species are like a house. The predators are the roof and the prey are the walls if species get taken away the house will eventually fall". What is your goals for this year?

young ocean explorers

Hi,
Matilda here. Today we had a really cool experience. The young ocean explorers came. This time it was a lady called Riley and she explained heaps of stuff about the sea here are some facts:

1.   Mussels are like filters. one mussel can filter 350 litres of water a day but because of over fishing now it would take two years to filter the Firth of Thames.
2.   1 out of 1,000 baby turtles survive so that's why we need to protect them.
3.   Parrot fish poo creates a lot of the sand on tropical islands.
Did you enjoy Riley's visit? Here is a link so you can see a cool video

two mice story

Hi this is my 2 mice story that I have been working on for a while. Last week on Friday we had Mr P in our class and we did some writing about two mice and the picture won the animal of the year award in 2012. Do you think that they are fighting or dancing?

Mouse one
The cheese was sitting just there and if the other mouse sitting nearby didn’t decide to fight me then I would be digging my teeth into it’s soft tangy cheesy goodness but no she had to come and steal it.
Mouse two
I can’t believe it what cheek, I was walking around the train station looking for a meal and I saw a piece of cheese sitting there and no one else was around so I went over and before I knew it some other mouse had snuck up on me and bought me to the ground shouting “ cheese stealer” but then I jumped back up and bared my fluffy fists.
I can’t be believe it I was just protecting what was rightfully mine then that other mouse came along and tried to steal it. So I did what any mouse would do and pounced. She fell to the ground and then jumped up bearing her dangerous fists.

Survival kit

Hi this is my survival kit that I have been working on for a while. If I had to go on a adventure these are the things that I would bring. What would you bring if you had to choose?
